Introduction to Activity Based Therapy

Activity-based therapies provide task-specific movements for functional tasks, standing and walking by activating the neuromuscular system below the injury level, optimizing the central state of excitability, and providing sensory cues specific to the motor task during intense repetitive training for recovery after neurologic injury.

Objectives

Upon completing this course you should be able to:

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic science related to activity-based therapy.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the guiding principles of activity-based therapy, with an emphasis on locomotor training and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.
• Recognize the role of rehabilitation in activity-dependent plasticity and the importance of standardization.
• Identify and incorporate the principles of activity-based therapy during patient evaluation and progression.
