Over the Hip Transfer
A transfer where the team member leans the participant’s shoulder over the team members hip and grasps the gait belt which has been placed around the lap (greater trochanters) of the participant when doing a dependent lift from one surface to another. A sliding board can be used with this transfer as well. Proper lifting technique is emphasized during this transfer (Bend and lift with the legs, keep back straight, and move your feet instead of twisting your back. Keep the participant close to your body when performing the transfer). When performed correctly, most of the weight of the participant will be transferred to the team member’s and participant’s legs during transfer, versus the team member lifting the participant with his/her arms.
