Head-Hips Maneuver

This refers to the movement of the head and shoulders of the participant in the opposite direction that you want the hips to move. For example, if you want the hips back in a chair, the head and shoulders need to lean forward. If the participant is being transferred to the right, the head and shoulders need to be leaned forward and left. When assisting with the transfer, such as during an Over The Hip (OTH) transfer to the participant’s right, the team member will place the participant’s right shoulder on the right hip. This also allows the team member to see the surface to which they will be transferring the participant.
